I recently conducted a survey with the help of local business owners in different towns and asked them two simple questions.


Question 1: "Where do you currently advertise"?

Question 2: "Do you have a website"?  


The answers to these questions were almost exactly the same in each instance, to every business surveyed, in each town. Very few businesses were advertising in the local or regional papers, as they thought it was too expensive, and brought them little result.

Everyone said that the Yellow Pages was far too expensive and had too much competition. Some had bought ads in local business web directories but they had no idea if that was working for them
or not.

All in all, no surprises there then. 

For question two, only about 5% of the businesses I surveyed, had a website. Some said that "they were in the process of having a website built"....but had been for months!  

The huge majority though, replied that, "they didn't sell anything online, so they didn't need a website".

It is a fact that most people now use the internet to search for local business and services these days more than any other "traditional" method. However, not everyone is searching these businesses to buy a product or service with credit card in hand, looking at each website in turn, deciding where to spend their money. 

People are doing their research on businesses! 

They are searching Google UK for Plumbers, Painters, PC Repairs, Electricians, Taxis, Wedding Hire, Builders, Couriers, Car Sales, Florists, Pet Stores, Carpet Fitters, Estate Agents, Joiners, Childminders, Hotels, Restaurants, Beauticians, Dog Walkers, etc, etc, etc.

You name it, people are using Google Local to do their "due dilligence" and find out about the businesses available. Information such as, how long have they been in business, where are they situated, what are the business hours, payment methods etc - and most importantly - the experiences of past and present customers, before spending their cash.  

And Guess what!

They are not all sitting at home in front of their computer. They may be at the office, on the train with a laptop, or even walking down the street using their phone to access the internet.

They are using the worlds most powerful search engine to find out about businesses in their town or area. And it doesn't matter if you have been in business for decades - if you are not online nowadays, then you lack credibilty!

So, as far as they are concerned, if you are not there, then you don't exist. So they find what they are looking for somewhere else! i.e. Your competitors.

Hence, you are almost certainly losing out on customers and profits! It's time to get the internet working for your business!
